Ancestories: Readings of Kamau Brathwaite’s Ancestors
Ancestories is a close reading of Kamau Brathwaite’s semi-autobiological barbdian texts, Mother Poem and Sun Poem, the first two books of his second trilogy, Ancestors (2001). As in The Arrivants, Brathwaite assumes the mask of Nummo, prophet, dreamer, singer and timeless multi-voiced witness and narrator of the submerged histories of both the island and its inhabitants. Ancestories endeavours to take the reader on two relaxed journeys through the coralline caves, beaches, hills and gullies, lights, colours and brooding darkness of Brathwaite’s
interior and exterior landscapes.
